Yes, bloodwork is required before starting hormonal therapy. It provides essential baseline levels of hormones like testosterone, estrogen, thyroid, and others to ensure safe and effective treatment. Bloodwork helps identify underlying conditions, prevents adverse reactions, and allows providers to customize dosages for optimal results while staying compliant with medical and legal standards.

Hormone therapy (HT) can be a safe and effective treatment when used appropriately under medical supervision. It is commonly prescribed for hormonal imbalances, menopause, andropause (low testosterone), thyroid disorders, and other endocrine-related conditions. However, as with any medical treatment, safety depends on individual factors, the type of hormones used, dosage, and overall health status.

A compound blend of testosterone offers customized benefits that basic, single-ingredient testosterone may not provide. Compounded testosterone formulations can combine multiple ingredients—such as testosterone cypionate with anastrozole (an estrogen blocker) or other hormones—to better support the individual’s unique hormonal profile and treatment goals.
For example, some patients may experience estrogen conversion (aromatization) when taking basic testosterone. A compound blend can include a low dose of an aromatase inhibitor to help prevent side effects like water retention, gynecomastia, or mood swings. Additionally, compounded blends may include DHEA or pregnenolone to support cognitive function, libido, and adrenal health—offering a more holistic approach.
Compounding also allows for personalized dosages and delivery methods, such as creams, troches, or injections in custom concentrations. This flexibility ensures optimal absorption, minimizes side effects, and supports better hormonal balance.
In short, someone may choose a compounded testosterone blend for a more tailored, comprehensive therapy that addresses multiple hormonal factors—not just testosterone deficiency.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) typically uses synthetic hormones or those derived from animal sources to treat hormone imbalances. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) uses plant-derived hormones that are chemically identical to those naturally produced by the human body. BHRT is often customized for each patient, while traditional HRT is usually standardized.

What Are Compounded Medications?
Compounded Medications are patient-specific medication prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider based on a medical assessment and compounded in a 503(A) Compounding Pharmacy or 503(B) Outsourcing Facility.
Compounded medications do not undergo pre-market review or an FDA-approval process. They may differ in efficacy, safety, risk, and side-effect profiles from commercially available or FDA-approved drugs. Data from clinical trials on FDA-approved medications should not be used to make assessments related to compounded medications.
NuBalance Health exclusively works with licensed compounding pharmacies in the United States
